Off Season

Went down to the twelfth street ballpark where I played for one season as a kid. Wasn't much of a baseball player, hockey was more my sport. My nephew plays a bunch of sports, baseball being one of them. I'm amazed at how competitive it has become. They have one or two games a week during the season. They practice all year round though. During the season they will have a practice every day that there isn't a game. Then in the off season the meet once a week at the indoor batting cages. When I played we only had one game and one practice per week.
Good or bad, hard to say. I'd have to say good in the sense that it keeps some kids out of trouble. What do you think?

I was involved for many years in youth sports, Sometimes I think the youth sports have gotten out of hand with some coaches living a fantasy, losing sight of what youth sports should be. I was in charge of almost 90 coaches in a soccer program, recruited many myself. I would say that the majority were by far excellent. The best part of sports from my point of view is this. Kids get something to do, learn to play as teams, are introduced to many other different kids. Being in a gym or on a field is a much better option than being on the streets. I am old enough now to have seen lots of kids grow up and give back to the programs, and many coaches still giving their time when they don’t even have kids in the programs anymore. That’s a win win situation.
